The far view into freedom at the “Krippenstein”

Riding up to the roof of the world heritage region to enjoy the exceptional view across the whole “Salzkammergut” – this can be experienced by taking the cable car up to the Krippenstein.

From the village Obertraun, you can reach the valley station of the Dachstein-Krippenstein cable car by car or bus (see map). From there, you can take the cable car to the mountain station Krippenstein in two stages. This spot reveals a breath-taking mountain experience which will be inspiring for everybody. Starting from the mountain station of the cable car, a great variety of hiking routes is well developed within this fascinating mountain area. Those clearly marked routes represent different challenges in terms of physical condition. They range from very easy to quite difficult. (Hint: You have free access to detailed maps in the waiting hall of the cable car valley station.)

Most recommendable is the so called “WeltNATURerbeblick”, a place where you get a special insight into the world heritage region. Starting from the Krippenstein mountain station, this spot can be reached very easily on foot in approximately 5 min and is barrier-free accessible (suitable for wheelchairs). At this point, you will have the chance for an exceptional view to the famous karst plateau “Am Stein” in eastern direction as well as to the “Schladminger glacier”, the “Hohe Gjaidstein”, the top of the “Dachstein”, the Hallstätter glacier and the well-known “Simony” mountain refuge. If you take a 10 min hike from the WeltNATURerbeblick to the “Welterbespirale”, a building of helical construction, the top of the Krippenstein at 2100 altitude meters will be reached. At this wonderful place, a 360-degree view over the unique Austrian mountain landscape can be enjoyed.

From this point, you even get the chance to see Hallstatt village. Once more it can be witnessed how this village is delightfully embraced by nature. On the way back from the top of the Krippenstein and close to the Krippenstein mountain station of the cable car, the beautiful Krippenstein Lodge is located. The Lodge invites you to rest and enjoy culinary delights, while having a far view to the mountains. This allows you to feel immeasurable freedom.

If the weather does not play along, the cable car can be exited at the mid-station “Schönbergalm” (see map) in order to explore the mystic ice caves. Guided tours through the world-renowned “Dachstein”- ice cave and the mammoth cave are offered at this place. The tour will take about 50 min. You can sign in for the tour directly at the mid-station “Schönbergalm”. There you will get the respective time and your personal ticket number for the guided tour.

For sport enthusiasts, the “Krippenstein” is, besides demanding mountain tours, an attractive spot for paragliding (see map). Many are overwhelmed by the unbounded freedom which can be enjoyed when paragliding down from the” Krippenstein”. For those who are unexperienced but nevertheless interested in paragliding, tandem flights are offered.

The attractive architecture of Hallstatt

Houses and buildings in Hallstatt show delightful decorations made of wood, which makes them particularly attractive. A walk through Hallstatt village with special focus on the architecture provides deep insights into this world-renowned and lovely art of building.

Exploring the buildings of Hallstatt is an adventure for enthusiasts of architecture and people with high interests in the art of building. The houses of Hallstatt are an expression of lively traditions and represent the joie de vivre that is typical for the local people. The Catholic church of Hallstatt with the world-famous charnel house is of outstanding historical interest (see map).

The winged alter in a late-gothic style was created by master Leonhard Astl in the Catholic church which is composed of two sectors. This alter is a true rarity of historic art. The history of the church is mystic and harbours a manifold of secrets which have been unable to unravel by historians. Today, historians believe that the first Christian community had already existed 1050 after Christ and that this commune domiciled a small Romanesque Church around 1181 after Christ. The powerful church tower of the 12th century can be viewed today and is a witness from those old ages. Next to the Catholic church you can find the Hallstatt charnel house, situated in the Michael’s Chapel. Also this famous sight dates back to the 12th century. In the charnel house, an extraordinary collection of more than 600 artistically painted skulls can be found. The painted skulls are an expression of a traditional burial rite in Hallstatt, which is admired from visitors from all over the world.
